SOUTHREEF SETS SAIL!A massive engineering and water management programme is preparing the ground for the largest ever city centre mixed use scheme to be constructed by Thomas Fish and Sons. The facts and figures demonstrate the scale of Southreef, a visually stunning development feature a mix of waterfront apartments, cutting-edge offices and bars and restaurants along the canal bank on the Southside of the city. With more than 70,000 tons of soil removed to create two laters of underground parking, and 10 million litres of ground water being extracted every day - expected to total 2.5 billion litres during the life of the project - this complex scheme calls on all the construction and inter-disciplinary skills that the team at Thomas Fish and Sons can bring to a development of this size, located on one of the major routes into the city centre. The excavation is the largest to be carried out by the company and has involved installing over 700 steel sheet piles at the perimeter to form a coffer dam. In addition, a total of 550 concrete piles have been driven into the ground. When completed the development will use 40,000 tons of concrete and over 2,000 tons of steel reinforcement, enough to stretch a distance of 550 miles from Glasgow to Lands End. The size of the development is such that it has been necessary to narrow the traffic lanes along the stretch of Canal Street bordering the development to allow for all the movement in and out of the site. Featuring 237 apartments and 54,000 sq.ft. of business space, office retail and bar-restaurant opportunities, Southreef has plenty of green credentials. The residential element of the development will be awarded an Eco-homes 'very good' rating and 85% of the roof areas will be green roofs, planted with living sedum. Other green features include low energy glass and thermal shading throughout the residential and business space. Led by Project Manager Ranjit Lall, working with three experienced site managers, a project manager and design manager in-house, in association with Levitate Architects and BWB Consulting, the professional team will involve at least 300 construction workers at the height of the scheme. With a third tower crane just put in place, the development already has a high profile as the construction team work to create a modern landmark which will help define the emerging Southside of the city. |
